REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA ADOPTION PROGRAM

CHILDREN

Ethnicity:  mainly Caucasian, possibly some Eurasian or Asian children.
Age:  18 months to 16 years.
Medicals:  children are tested for HIV, TB, and Hepatitis C prior to referral.
Background:  we place children from multiple regions in Georgia.

ELIGIBILITY

Age:  Adoptive mothers must be no older than 50 to adopt a child under 2 years old.
Marital Status:  Single women and couples, maximum of 2 divorces per adoptive parent
Family:  There are no restrictions on family size provided adoptive parents can show sufficient income and resources to care for adopted child.
Health:  Parents should be in good medical health.  If you are concerned that you have a disability that could affect your adoption, please let us know.

COSTS

Adoption from Georgia can be expensive.  As the costs vary per individual case, Kids To Adopt doesn't post fees online.

PROCESS

Parents send in an application to Kids To Adopt.
Upon approval of application, Kids To Adopt sends out a contract.  Parents must sign the contract and send it back to us with the first payment.
Upon receipt of the signed contract, Kids To Adopt sends parents the Dossier Kit which includes instructions on compiling the documents required by Georgia.
When parents have completed all of their paperwork, they send it back to KTA.  We proof your dossier to the best of our abilities, then send it off to our Georgian coordinators.
Our Georgian coordinators proof and register your dossier with the Ministry office in charge of adoptions.  Once approved by the Ministry, parents will receive a referral (usually takes from 1 to 3 months).  After acceptance of the referral, parents generally travel within 4-6 weeks for a trip of approximately 2 weeks.
Parents travel to meet the child and attend court. Both parents must be present for the court hearing.
Adoptive parents may leave after the court hearing. Escorts may be available in some cases.
Parents must submit Post Adoption reports as required by Georgian law at the time of adoption.

TIME FRAME

The time frame is very difficult to foresee as it depends on many factors, some being:  parents diligence in completing paperwork, Georgian and USA national holiday's, problems with incorrect paperwork, regional changes in requirements, emergencies, etc.

Parents can estimate the process, from start to finish, taking at least 4 to 10 months from submission of dossier, depending on a variety of factors.

GENERAL INFORMATION ON GEORGIA

Georgia is located in southwestern Asia on the black sea between Russia and Turkey. It is about the size of South Carolina and shares borders with Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia. The country has a mostly Mediterranean climate near the coastal areas with mountainous regions in the north and south.

Georgia has approximately 4.6 million people. The primary religious beliefs are Orthodox Christian (84%) and Muslim (10%) and most of the population is Georgian (84%), Azeri (7%) and Armenian (6%). The economic base is agriculture, mining and manufacturing with the main exports being scrap metal, wine, mineral water, ores, vehicles, fruits and nuts

The country's long-term growth plans are to reduce regulation, taxes and corruption in order to attract additional foreign investment. The construction of oil and gas pipelines and the Kars-Akhalkalaki Railroad are part of a strategy to capitalize on Georgia's strategic location between Europe and Asia and to develop its role as a transit point for gas, oil and other goods.
